Description:
Magnificent
Meiji Bronze Jardiniere
These stunning deep-cast bronze
pieces date from the Meiji Period (c. 1880) and feature
astonishing detail on Buddhist themes. The design
is highly spiritual, with the top ring of flying pelicans
representing sky, the dominant ring of elaborate themed
stories representing earth and the bottom ring of
intertwined three clawed dragons representing sea.
There are six feature stories on each urn, twelve
different images in all. All feature bird themes,
some based on Jakarta tales. The twelve story panels
are extra deep cast and fully detailed. Wonderful
dragon handles decorate both sides of each piece.
8 pronounced lion heads ring each bronze. These are
rare pieces of extraordinary craftsmanship, weighing
over 350 pounds a piece. Some minor damage on the
dragon handles (which are removable), and normal wear
and patina on the bronze. These very large jardiniere
take the breath away!
