Description:
3-4th Century Schist
of Bodhisattva
Magnificent and very
ancient gray stone schist fragment of a seated Bodhisattva,
most likely Maitreya, the future Buddha, with full
aureole. Spectacular workmanship from Grandhara with
an overall height of 11 inches (27.9 cm). Maitreya
is known as Miroku to the Japanese and Miluo Fo to
the Chinese. In Tibet he's known as Byams-pa, in Vietnamese
Di-lac and in Korean Mi-rug. This future Buddha will
appear after Mappo, the period when the Dharma is
no longer practiced, and normally appears deep in
meditation on the "future" of the world. His name
means "benevolence" or "friendship." Currently mounted
on a modern display base of black painted wood.
