Description:
Chinese
mounted deitites
A pair of fanciful celestial
riders in polychrome and gilt. Qing Dynasty, mounted
on small wooden stands, whose charging steeds are portrayed
with deeply foreshortened legs to emphasize their supernatural
speed. Accented with scroll work, unfinished on the
reverse, and attached to their stands with wooden pegs,
they were originally architectural elements. Heights
from 5". Because of the age of these pieces, there is
considerable wear to the pigments and scattered chips.
One of the pieces displays a loss of one foreleg on
the horse, as well as an attribute once carried by the
rider.
