Description:
An ivory snuff bottle, in the form
of a deity on an elephant
An ivory snuff bottle,
in the form of a deity on an elephant. The deity may
have been Samantabhadra Bodhisattva riding on top of
an elephant, one of the largest of animals. While it
is gentle, the elephant has a strength that exceeds
even that of a lion, and thus expresses the compassion
of Samantabhadra. Delicate, well adorned and detailed.
19th century
Size is 3" height x 2" width.
