Avalokiteshvara is depicted with one thousand arms, representing
the strength of the one thousand Universal Emperors, within the palm
of each are one thousand eyes, representing the wisdom of the one
thousand Buddhas to appear in this Fortunate Aeon (Bhadra Kalpa).
Lokeshvara is considered to have 108 main forms, to combine both
the male and female, and his ability to incarnate and manifest in
compassionate action for the benefit of sentient beings is without
limit.
Avalokiteshvara is one of "Eight Close Sons" of
Mahayana Buddhism, a group of Eight Great Bodhisattvas who appear
most frequently in the Sutras.
Avalokiteshvara is the patron Bodhisattva of
Mahayana Buddhism, the Great Vehicle, is known as Kuan Yin in China,
and Chenrezig, as his incarnation as the Six-Syllable Mantra, "Om
Mani Padme Hum".
